I use this drive under recommendation online for my newly acquired Microsoft surface pro 7+.I tested the drive ahead of time using a third-party adapter to check that it generally worked. And then gently removed it's sticker and applied regular CPU thermal paste using a small plastic spatula in a thin layer in order to reapply the OEM metal shell and heat spreader assembly for the Microsoft surface. This was highly recommended so I didn't want to skip this step however you will void your ability to return the drive if you do this. Unlike other drives I can validate this drive uses a sticker that is not a copper or metal foil. It's a simple thick plastic sticker. Though I was able to remove mine in one complete motion. Afterwards I did test the completed drive in a separate drive adapter just to make sure I didn't get any of the paste on electrical components that might short. Everything works fine and this particular paste is thick enough that it won't run under heat. I installed it back in the surface and it was detected immediately and I then ran the Windows 11 set up using a USB-C flash drive and the rest worked exactly as it was supposed to. This isn't the fastest drive in the world but it is faster than the original 128 GB chip that was in there and it's also one of the cooler running drives available that's known to work. I'll also point out that while firmware upgrades will probably never be available the native western digital SSD management software did successfully recognize the drive and could give you general stats about it though things like smart diagnostics failed to successfully run on the drive. So I'm unsure if you can do things like sanitize or trim on mass via WD software tools. And obviously you'll probably never locate firmware and the management software will probably never offer it. But at the very least you can get accurate temperature readings using it so you'll know how bad it's heating up if your installation job didn't use a sink.Given the low price I decided to take the plunge and modify it so that it couldn't be returned and so far I've had zero issues and it's been running successfully for two weeks without any problem including recovering from sleep that I have seen under Windows 11.The seller had very good packaging and sent the drive promptly. I recommend the seller for this item.
